At first blush, many collectors seem to look past some of Hasui’s more subtle night scenes. They do that to their own detriment. This design and particularly this impression is a masterpiece of composition and printing.  The fawn draws the viewer to the subtle asymmetrical composition of the design, where the torii gate, standing at center, marks the transition where the world of the mundane yields to that of the sacred. The depth of the printing is astonishing—deep matte blues and blacks provide a profound sense of depth that expands beyond the confines of the design, further echoing the symbolism of the torii gate. The pines are printed with a soft fuzzy registration that suggests movement from a magical breeze. The lanterns, the only semblance of light, help bring the viewer back to the world of the mundane.

Connoisseur's Note

This print is a true time capsule. It was never framed or displayed and was stored in archival boxes. Prints in this pristine condition, particularly those created before the earthquake, seldom come up for sale.  This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to own a stunning Hasui design with fresh and vivid colors in its original state.
