Details
A water sprite-like figure emerges from a waterfall. The female form, clothed in a kimono, holds up a woodwind instrument and plays a tune. This charming design showcases Lum’s lyricism, as the lines of the composition appear fluid with a graceful sense of movement. The moon overhead crowns the figure and recalls the imagery of the Buddhist deity, Kwan Yin.
Connoisseur's Note
This print is executed on Lum’s tissue-like paper. The print is in excellent condition with soft but vivid colors and stunning use of bokashi, or color gradation, throughout the composition. The print is dated and signed in pencil by the artist at the bottom of the image. The work is one of the earliest designs in Lum’s body of work. It was produced shortly after returning to the United States from a seven-week tour of Japan.
