Details

For a landscape artist, Yoshida provides the viewer with an incredibly sensitive and psychological nude. The subject is lost in thought, almost pensive, as she looks off and away from the viewer. Yoshida skillfully makes use of baren and bokashi work throughout the design to invoke steam and humidity, which is palpable to the viewer, as it engulfs the room. Though this subject is not common in Yoshida’s body of work—he only produced three nudes out of five portraits—his use of light and shadow is quite skillful bringing to mind the many landscapes where light played a central role in his compositions. In this design, Yoshida extends light in various directions demonstrating his ability at rendering it in all its forms and qualities.

Connoisseur's Note

This impression is an excellent example of the design. Exhibiting fresh, untouched colors, the print looks like it could have been created today. This print features Yoshida’s “jizuri seal,” as well as a brush signature, indicating it was produced under his strict supervision.
