Details
A steady rain falls in the evening. The soft light from the teahouse’s lantern suggests it may be in use. The rhythmic pattern of rain (rendered in silver mica) across the composition provides an acoustic ambiance for the traditionally silent practice of tea. Though a night scene, a myriad of rich dark tones populates the composition, showcasing skillful use of bokashi (color gradation) throughout the serene and contemplative scene.
Connoisseur's Note
One of six untitled designs in the set Collection of Views of the Moto-Hakone Minami Mountain Villa. Privately commissioned by the Iwasaki family, the set was published in 1935 and sold to foreign visitors when the villa was turned into a hotel before WWII.
