Details

In this captivating Kawase Hasui print, we are immersed in the tranquility of a snow-covered night along the shoreline. The small cottages, nestled along the coast, exude a sense of warmth and coziness against the wintry backdrop. Behind them, dense clusters of trees add depth and texture to the scene, their dark silhouettes contrasting beautifully against the soft glow of the moonlit sky. Amidst the quietude, a single cottage emanates a vibrant yellow light, casting a luminous reflection upon the calm waters below. A lone figure, returning home after a day's journey, navigates a small raft toward the shore, guided by the beacon of light from the cottage window. As he approaches, one can almost sense the anticipation of his family awaiting his safe return. Meanwhile, delicate snowflakes drift gently from above, adding a sense of motion and tranquility to the picturesque landscape. Through Hasui's masterful composition, we are transported to a serene winter scene, where every detail comes together to evoke a sense of peace and wonder.

Connoisseur's Note

The print bears the publisher’s “B-type” seal at the lower right margin, indicating it is a first-state. As such, it showcases the highest level of craftsmanship from Watanabe's workshop. Notice the skillful bokashi on the blue of the water and in the gray hues throughout the background sky, as well as the circular barren effects throughout the composition. The razor-sharp impression, combined with these printing embellishments, exemplifies the pinnacle of print production in 20th-century Japan.
