Details
The teakettle is on the burner, zabuton floor cushions are out, a window is open, and a stunning mountain vista draws the viewer in to occupy this finely appointed room, if for only a moment. Though at first blush this design may appear unusual for Hasui, it is consistent with his oeuvre in that the design does not focus on a figure but on a landscape or plane where the viewer feels welcomed to enter and inhabit. Much like other Shin Hanga, the landscape itself in Hasui prints is the sole character with whom the viewer must negotiate. Here we have an exclusive seat in the room where the drama of the landscape plays out.
Connoisseur's Note
This print is a true time capsule. It was never framed or displayed and was stored in archival boxes. Prints in this pristine condition seldom come up for sale. This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to own a stunning Hasui design with fresh and vivid colors in its original state.
