Details

Hasui takes full advantage of the ample light of the full moon, highlighting the beauty and complexity of this temple’s exotic architecture. The print depicts Tsukiji Hongan-ji, a Buddhist temple located near the old fish market. The temple's architecture is not exactly traditional Japanese and is more a reference to Indian architecture, which visually connects the Buddhist faith’s Indian origins. Hasui brilliantly utilizes the soft light of the moon, highlighting each structural element in the ornate façade, which is made up of a white limestone-like material, reflecting the moon’s light with a soft luster that invites the viewer in.

Connoisseur's Note

The printing quality of this design makes the print noteworthy. At first look, this design is not one of Hasui's most eye-catching prints, but when you look closer, you will see the subtle light emanating from the structure's striking façade. This print has a profound contemplative quality that builds as the viewer considers the composition.
