This reference represents an excellent cursory overview of the modern Meiji master of woodblock prints and etchings, Kobayashi Kiyochika. Born in the Edo period but coming of age as an artist in the Meiji period, Kiyochika's work straddles two worlds—the innocence of closed-off Edo and the opening of Japan’s doors to foreign influence and power. Kiyochika's work is decisively modern and yet looks back with nostalgic and, at times, longing eyes.
In 106 pages, this book illustrates the diversity of Kiyochika's body of work, showcasing woodblock prints as well as his experimental work with etching. There are also illustrations of the artist's original work executed in sumi-e and Western watercolors.
