The Sosaku Hanga movement was initiated in 1904 with Yamamoto Kanae’s self-carved and self-printed woodblock print, “Fisherman,” as an addition to the magazine, Myojo. Initially, these creative prints had no commercial viability and the movement survived as inclusions in self-directed publications, (dojin magazines). These magazines helped introduce artists to a larger audience as well as disseminate artistic ideas. Though many of the magazines were short-lived, hundreds of them sprouted up over the years, particularly in the decades leading to World War II. Virtually every Sosaku Hanga artist created artwork specifically designed for these magazines, and as such, they are treasure troves for historians and connoisseurs of the genre.

This outstanding work of scholarship lists virtually all the dojin magazines produced during the early years of the Sosaku Hanga movement. This reference identifies each magazine and illustrates its entire contents, depicting many print designs for the first time in print. The book contains more than 1,000 pages with thousands of illustrations of prints. The value of this book cannot be overstated.
