Details

1956 is the year the artist first started making prints in earnest. This smaller work is among the earliest designs produced by Nakayama and may, in fact, be his first realized print. The scarce design depicts a young child in a robe with hood. The striking design with bright yellow coloration and silver metallic background anticipates much of Nakayama’s affinity for bright colors and interest in metallic pigments.

Connoisseur's Note

This print is an exceedingly rare work. The size and manner of its execution strongly suggest it is among the very first impressions of the artist’s long and prolific career. The signature and date are among the earliest examples of Nakayama. The very active and expressionist printing style suggests the strong influence the sosaku hanga movement had on the artist.
