Details
The rainbow trout's distinctive coloration is rendered with extraordinary subtlety. Soft bands of rose, silver, blue, and green move across the body in seamless transitions, capturing the iridescent effects that give the species its name. Ohno employs sophisticated bokashi throughout the design, creating a sense of depth and luminosity rarely achieved in natural history imagery.
The composition is notable for its restraint. Rather than surrounding the fish with descriptive environmental details, Ohno isolates the subject and allows color itself to become the primary expressive element. The resulting image is both scientifically precise and visually poetic, demonstrating the artist's ability to elevate observation into art.
Connoisseur's Note
Unlike many species native to Japanese waters, rainbow trout were introduced and cultivated as part of broader efforts to diversify fisheries and expand food resources. Their inclusion within Familiar Fishes of Japan reflects the series' comprehensive scope and its engagement with contemporary developments in aquatic life management.
The print also highlights one of Ohno's greatest strengths: his capacity to translate color into emotion. The trout's iridescent surface becomes more than a descriptive feature; it serves as a vehicle through which the artist explores light, atmosphere, and visual sensation. Such qualities place the work among the most painterly designs in the entire series.
