Unlike the majority of works in Familiar Fishes of Japan, which focus upon individual specimens, this composition presents a school of fish moving together through the water. The arrangement introduces a strong sense of rhythm and motion, as repeated forms create visual patterns that sweep across the image. Ohno uses overlapping bodies and carefully varied positioning to avoid monotony while preserving a sense of collective unity.
The composition demonstrates remarkable control of spatial relationships. Subtle shifts in color and tone suggest depth within the aquatic environment, allowing individual fish to emerge and recede throughout the scene. The result is a composition of unusual complexity and vitality.
