Details
The segmented body of the kuruma-ebi creates a composition rich in visual rhythm. Ohno carefully articulates each section of the shell, using finely controlled color transitions to emphasize volume and structure. Warm reds, browns, and amber tones dominate the image, while delicate highlights suggest the reflective qualities of the exoskeleton.
The shrimp's curving form introduces a strong sense of movement, contrasting with the more static poses found elsewhere in the series. Every detail contributes to the overall harmony of the composition, revealing the artist's extraordinary command of design.
Connoisseur's Note
Crustaceans presented artists with unique opportunities to explore pattern, texture, and structure. In the hands of a less accomplished designer, such subjects could easily become overly descriptive. Ohno instead transforms the shrimp into an elegant arrangement of repeating forms and subtle color relationships.
The work also reflects the importance of shellfish and crustaceans within Japanese culinary culture. By including species beyond conventional fish, Ohno expanded the scope of his project and produced a richer portrait of the aquatic resources that shaped everyday life throughout the archipelago.
