Details
Suspended within crystalline water, the ayu appears almost weightless, its silver-green body catching light like a fragment of the river itself. Delicate transitions of olive, gold, and pearl dissolve into one another, suggesting the shifting reflections of sunlight beneath a summer current. The simplicity of the composition is deceptive. Through restrained color gradations and expertly controlled bokashi, Ohno creates an atmosphere of remarkable clarity and stillness.
The sweetfish has long been admired for its graceful form and association with Japan's mountain streams. Here, the artist distills the species to its essential characteristics, allowing shape, color, and movement to speak with uncommon eloquence. The result is a work that balances scientific observation with a quiet lyricism seldom encountered in natural history imagery.
Connoisseur's Note
The ayu occupies a cherished place within Japanese culture. Long associated with summer, mountain rivers, and seasonal cuisine, the fish evokes memories of regional landscapes and traditional fishing practices. Poets and artists have celebrated the species for centuries, making it a subject rich with cultural resonance beyond its biological identity.
Collectors often regard the early Impressions from Volume I as among the most refined works in the series. In prints such as this, Ohno reveals his extraordinary ability to elevate a familiar species into an image of enduring beauty. The composition's quiet restraint exemplifies a distinctly Japanese aesthetic in which elegance emerges through economy rather than excess.
